House of Cards' Perfect Trailer Release

Donald Trump was recently inaugurated and assumed office as the 45th President of the United States on January 20th, 2017. The ceremony began at 11:41am (according to Wikipedia article). At 10:30am, the Netflix original series "House of Cards" released its first trailer for the upcoming season. As seen in the video above, the video features an upside-down waving American flag in a dark, stormy day with children reciting the national anthem. The tweet was labeled with "We make the terror", a quote from the Netflix series character President Frank Underwood.

Frank Underwood is described as a "manipulative, sociopathic, evil" political figure who will run through anyone in his path in his pursuit of success. He personally commits murder twice, arranges another, and constantly threatens anyone who stands in his way.

Throughout the election, fans of the acclaimed TV series could find tweets from the official Twitter page, describing the election process. They released tweets for election night, debates, and responses to various media outlets.

I think the release of the ominous trailer on Trump's inauguration day was perfect way to promote the upcoming season. I think it's fair to say that some fans find some similarities between Underwood and Trump, and the video accurately describes how some Americans felt. The Netflix show capitalized on the historic day, and promoted the upcoming season in a very simple, yet effective video that became viral nearly instantly.

  1. House of Cards, aside from being one of my favorite shows, has an above average and entertaining Twitter feed. As an avid user of Twitter, I too saw this tweet the morning of the inauguration and found it quite clever (while remaining politically neutral because that is not the point of this blog) and a phenomenal way to capture the attention of all of the page's followers and to those that may have seen it via retweet. I like how you went back in their feed to pull other tweets from the debates and election day as well. Since it is a political drama, theses tweets do not feel out of place coming from them and it just showcases how they are taking advantage of the social media platform to stay current and connect with their followers.

  2. I'm a big fan of House of Cards, but I didn't see any of this until just reading your blog. Actual politics aside, I think HOC's drop of the trailer is pure genius in light of the inauguration a few weeks ago. A lot of people are worried about what to expect with the future of our country, and the trailer made me think, "What crazy thing could Underwood possibly do next?" People were all over social media the morning of the inauguration, and releasing the trailer that morning, especially because the show is politically based, probably got it that much more traction and hype for the upcoming season. I'm anxious to see what Season 5 will bring.

  3. I used to be obsessed with HOC! Even though I have fallen off the wagon, I still think it's an extremely unique and well-crafted series. It's an actual political show that is heavily political and grounded in reality, not the weird-ish fairytale of Scandal. Frank Underwood is an egomaniac with an unquenchable thirst for power, but at least he doesn't insist his press secretary lie about something as trivial as "crowd size" during the first press release.
